  • DRC president meets rights group, Kamerhe meets Kagame in Kigali

    Democratic Republic Of Congo
Leadership of international rights group, the International Federation for Human Rights, FIDH, on Tuesday (March 12) met with Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, president Tshisekedi.

The presidency said the FIDH team was led by Mr. Palu Sapu. Photos showed Sapu and his delegation members in exchanges with President Tshisekedi.

The human rights situation in the country had deteriorated considerably at the time Tshisekedi took over from Joseph Kabila in January following presidential polls in December 2018.

Human rights groups especially the FIDH had routinely called on Kinshasa to desist from using force to clampdown on protests.

Under Kabila, police used tear gas and in some cases live bullets against anti-government rallies. Tshisekedi has since promised to right all wrongs that have long been publicised.

  • DRC: 260,000 children severely malnourished- UNICEF

    Democratic Republic Of Congo
In the corridors of the Kasai nutritional centre in the Democratic Republic of Congo, mothers and their children wait for doctors to take care of them.

Susan and her daughter, Rosette escaped conflict in the Kasai region to find shelter in Kikwit in the country’s southwest. But, like thousands of other displaced people, she is desperate for help to feed her child.

“My daughter is malnourished and I have no money to feed her. She started to eat sand because she was so hungry. Now her belly is swollen. I can’t get my daughter medication and have no way of treating her. I’ve got nothing. I’m begging you to help me”, Susan said.

I can't get my daughter medication and have no way of treating her. I've got nothing. I'm begging you to help me.

Rosette passed away after this story was filmed.

Baleka Mado came with her four-year-old son Kanu, who is one of 260,000 children who, according to UNICEF, suffer from severe malnutrition. Insecurity means families cannot farm crops or earn money to buy food in the region.

“When we left the bush, it was because of hunger and suffering. When we found a village to rest in, I was told about this hospital where children could receive free medical care and food’‘, Mado said.

  • Ethiopian Airlines crash aftermath: Boeing to implement design changes on 737 MAX planes

As investigations into the cause of the Ethiopian Airlines crash continue, the questions surrounding the safety of the Boeing Boeing 737 MAX aircrafts have triggered some reactions from airlines, aviation regulators and the world’s biggest plane maker itself.

Since Monday several airlines including from Indonesia, China, Morocco, Singapore and Ethiopia have grounded their fleets of the Boeing 737 MAX planes.

The United States aviation regulator on Monday said it would task Boeing to implement design changes by April.

The FAA said the changes will “provide reduced reliance on procedures associated with required pilot memory items.”

The FAA also said Boeing will “update training requirements and flight crew manuals to go with the design change” to an automated protection system called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System or MCAS. The changes also include MCAS activation and angle of attack signal enhancements.

The FAA said in the notice made public that external reports are drawing similarities between the crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia. “However, this investigation has just begun and to date we have not been provided data to draw any conclusions or take any actions,” according to the Continued Airworthiness Notification to the International Community for Boeing 737 MAX 8 operators.

Boeing later confirmed the directive by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), saying it will deploy a software upgrade across the 737 MAX 8 fleet “in the coming weeks
